The safety and well-being of staff and visitors to Millennium Library is a top priority. The City of Winnipeg is looking at options to redesign the lobby to improve safety. We are inviting stakeholders to help ensure the design reflects the community and staff’s needs. The project is part of on-going safety improvements at the library.

The project will come up with options to redesign the lobby to improve safety for visitors and staff. The options will:

  • Create a safe, inclusive, accessible, and welcoming space
  • Improve sightlines for staff, security guards, and community safety hosts
  • Improve visibility of the public washrooms
  • Improve foot traffic flow

    The City met with stakeholders in winter 2024. Input from stakeholders helped make sure the proposed options address current concerns and challenges. This includes the lobby layout, sightlines, the screening process, and foot traffic flow. A Phase 1 stakeholder engagement summary and appendices are now available and provide an overview of feedback.

    The City is meeting with stakeholders again to present the lobby options and gather feedback. Feedback will help the project team refine the lobby options.

    The City is reaching out to stakeholders early on before designing options for the lobby. Stakeholder input will help ensure the options address issues and challenges with the current lobby. This includes the layout, sightlines, the screening process, and foot traffic flow.

    We are asking stakeholders from the following groups to provide their input as we develop options:

    • Downtown organizations
    • Library interest groups
    • City of Winnipeg and library staff
    • Security staff


    We expect to finish designing options in spring 2024. We will ask stakeholders for their feedback on the lobby options.
