Youville to Archibald proposed improvements – Youville intersection
Option 1: Updates to Youville and Marion without bike lanes
(select map to enlarge)
Option 1 would utilize the existing neighbourhood greenway along Eugenie to help reduce conflict between uses at the Eugenie-Marion intersection, and would not involve additional cycling infrastructure on the Marion-Goulet couplet.
This option makes improvements to each mode’s current experience, but also presents some implications.
Vehicles
Implications
- A signalized intersection may create extended wait times at red lights, where a pedestrian push-button controlled crossing would introduce minimal wait times.
- Back lane access to westbound Marion would be closed. Vehicles exiting Youville onto the back lane would be required to significantly reduce their speeds prior to turning, which increases the risk of rear-end collisions.
Improvements
- The curves on westbound Marion would be flattened to achieve 40 km/hr speeds (rather than the current 30 km/hr speeds), which improves sightlines and reduces the risk of collisions.
- Westbound Marion would gain a Transit bay.
Pedestrians
Implications
- Pedestrians wanting to cross would have to push the crossing button, then wait for traffic signals to change (compared to the “on-demand” push button and cross offered by a pedestrian crossing).
Improvements
- Pedestrian corridor would be replaced with traffic
- Sidewalks would be constructed on both sides of Youville.
- Median/island (bottom of map) would be made larger to reduce pedestrian crossing distance and restrict northbound Youville short-cutting.
Cyclists
Implications
- There would be no bike infrastructure at Youville and Marion.
- Cyclists whose destination is not on the adjacent greenway would have to ride on the road to reach their destination.
Improvements
- There would be new bike infrastructure on Tremblay Street, Evans Street, and Prosper Street, and the pilot neighbourhood greenway on Eugenie would remain. This infrastructure would connect to Happyland Park.
Option 2: Updates to Youville and Marion with bike lanes

Option 2 would add a uni-directional bike lane along the east side of Youville and a multi-use path along the south boulevard of Goulet and Marion.
This option makes improvements to each mode’s current experience, but also presents some implications.

Cyclists
Implications
- Westbound cyclists would be expected to make their way to Goulet, which would require crossing Marion at the new signalized intersection at Youville.
Improvements
- A unidirectional off-street bike lane would be constructed along the east side of Youville.
- An off-street multi-use path would be constructed along the south boulevard of Marion.
