We’re exploring what a modern, accessible recreation campus in Assiniboine South could look like.

The Assiniboine South area is growing, and so is the need for modern recreation facilities. We know many of the existing programs and facilities in the area are well-loved by the community. We also know we need to make some investments, so they continue to meet the needs of the community for years to come.

We are proposing the Assiniboine South Recreation Campus to be located at Varsity View Sportsplex and Marj Edey Park (911 Fairmont Rd.). This would bring activities together in one place for people of all ages to enjoy.

  • Possible designs
  • Costs
  • Proposed location

The Assiniboine South area of Winnipeg has both established and new neighbourhoods. While the area has several community organizations, recreation facilities, and community centres, many are outdated. 

We want to create a modern, accessible recreation campus that addresses the community’s growing recreation needs. 

Before we begin, there’s a lot we need to learn from the community about how they use the existing facilities, and what they would like to see in the future. There’s also a lot we already know about the area and nearby recreation that can help us figure out what could best serve this community. 

As we explore what a new regional recreation campus could look like, we will review the area’s recreation and park facilities, including: 

  • Varsity View Community Centre (multiple locations) 

  • Westdale Community Centre (multiple locations) 

  • Roblin Park Community Centre 

  • Eric Coy Arena 

Why we’re exploring a regional recreation campus  

Regional recreation campuses bring a variety of recreation activities together in one place which can include: 

  • Gymnasiums 

  • Fitness spaces 

  • Walking tracks  

  • Program and meeting rooms 

  • Arena space 

  • Water play

These larger facilities can serve people of all ages and make it easier for families to enjoy recreation together. They also have room to meet the needs of a growing city. We design regional recreation campuses to serve people living within about four to six kilometres, or about 150,000 to 200,000 residents.  

Winnipeg Recreation Strategy 

The Winnipeg Recreation Strategy found that more than 60 percent of our recreation facilities are over 50 years old. Many were built to older standards and no longer meet today’s needs. They also need major repairs and upgrades. In many cases, replacing older facilities is a better long-term investment than continuing to repair them.   

New recreation facilities provide accessible spaces and offer programs and amenities that support lifelong participation for all ages.  

Through public engagement, we will learn more from the community about their recreation needs now and into the future.
