Why are you considering a regional recreation campus in the Assiniboine South area of Winnipeg?
The Assiniboine South area is growing, and so is the need for modern recreation facilities. Many of the existing programs and facilities in the area:
Our goal is to create a modern, accessible, recreation campus that addresses the growing recreation needs of the community.
Why are you proposing to build a new multi-use campus at this site?
The Winnipeg Recreation Strategy notes that more than 60 percent of our recreation facilities are over 50 years old. These buildings were designed for the needs and standards of their time, but many are now outdated.
Many of these older facilities are also nearing the end of their life. They need major repairs and costly upgrades. Instead of spending a lot of money to fix buildings that are at the end of their life, the Strategy says that replacing them is often the better choice. New recreation facilities can be more accessible and better meet the needs of changing communities. They can also include programs and spaces for people of all ages.
Why did you choose the Varsity View Sportsplex and Marj Edey Park site for the proposed campus?
The site is on City-owned land and is conveniently located in a growing area. This location would allow us to offer several recreation activities in one location.

What area will the proposed campus serve?
We are planning this to be a regional recreation campus. This means it will serve residents across the broader area, not just one neighbourhood. Under the Winnipeg Recreation Strategy, regional recreation campuses are designed to serve an area of approximately four to six kilometers. However, people from outside the area may also choose to use the campus.
The proposed Assiniboine South Recreation Campus would serve the area from the west Perimeter to Route 90, and from the Assiniboine River to south of Wilkes Avenue.
How will the proposed Assiniboine South Recreation Campus affect other recreation and parks spaces nearby?
As part of this project, we will look at how nearby recreation sites can work together better. This review includes Varsity View Community Centre, Westdale Community Centre, Roblin Park Community Centre, and Eric Coy Arena.
What amenities are you considering?
We haven’t made any decisions yet on specific amenities. As part of this project, we will be looking at community needs and existing amenities. We will also use public feedback to help us decide what should be included.

What happens to existing community centres?
The community centres in the area serve an important role in meeting the recreation needs for the area. We are not planning for any closures, and will work with community partners throughout the planning process.
What about traffic and parking impacts?
Traffic, site access, walking, cycling, and parking will all be part of the planning and design work.
Isn’t the William R. Clement Parkway extension planned nearby? How will that impact this project?
As part of this study, we will consider how the planned William R. Clement Parkway extension could affect the site, including traffic impacts.
Will the campus mean park land will be lost?

How is population and community growth considered as part of this project?
Phase 1 of the project is all about information gathering. We need to know the current context, population trends, and recreation trends to plan for a campus that will serve the community for decades to come.
Will you accommodate existing users during construction?
We aren’t planning for construction right now. Right now, we are studying whether a regional recreation campus is the right solution for the area.
If the project is approved and funded by Council, construction will be phased to minimize impacts on users and the surrounding neighbourhood.
