Background

The St. James Civic Centre was built in 1967. It features an indoor arena, a swimming pool, a fitness room, and an auditorium. It was closed from April 2020 until September 2022 for critical building code, mechanical, electrical, structural, and accessibility upgrades.

In July 2021, the Government of Canada, Province of Manitoba, and City of Winnipeg announced $14 million in funding to expand the St. James Civic Centre. City Council approved an additional $3 million in October 2023.

The expansion project was developed with the help of the St. James Assiniboia 55+ Centre who will be relocating to the St. James Civic Centre. They will provide recreation programming that complements City of Winnipeg programming.

Construction is anticipated to begin in May 2025
