Sturgeon Athletic Field Off-Leash Dog Area

St. James area residents identified an off-leash dog area as a desired feature for the community as part of the St. James Community Parks and Recreation Project. A new off-leash dog area is being proposed for the Sturgeon Road Athletic Field.

Located north-west of the intersection of Sturgeon Road and Silver Avenue, the proposed design features:

  • Fencing around the perimeter, including partitioned areas for large and small dogs
  • Picnic tables, benches, and shade trees
  • Community message board
  • In-ground self-closing waste container
  • Expanded on-site parking and fenced walkway from the parking lot to the off-leash area

    The public engagement summary and appendices are now available. These documents provide an overview of feedback collected for the project.

    We are now planning an investigation of site conditions. This will take place in late spring or early summer. The results will tell us what the next steps will be.

    Thank you to all who took the survey, which was open May 4, 2022 - June 1, 2022. Feedback is currently being considered and a summary of the engagement process will be posted online.

    We’ve designed a proposed off-leash area that responds to what we heard as part of the St. James Community Parks and Recreation Project: that area residents want an off-leash area for their community.

    This proposed off-leash area is situated at the Sturgeon Road Athletic Field. Its future depends on your feedback.

    What we hear through this survey will help us confirm community wants and needs, determine community support for the proposed design, and move the project forward to final design and construction.

    Our goal is a field that supports athletics, athletes, and spectators while also serving dog owners and dogs and keeping all users safe.

    Review the proposed design and take the survey until June 1, 2022.
