At a Council meeting on March 26, 2026, Council decided to ask the Province of Manitoba to change the Highway Traffic Act. This change would allow the us to lower the default speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h using a by-law.
Right now, we can change speed limits, but it requires signage on each street to show the new limit. If the Highway Traffic Act changed, we could lower speed limits in residential neighbourhoods to 40 km/h without adding signs on every street.
If approved, the City would create a new plan for setting speed limits on residential streets.
We will provide an update on this plan before March 2027.
