Marion Street is a major route that connects neighbourhoods and transports people, goods, and services.

The Moving on Marion Street project aims to improve traffic flow, safety, and livability on Marion Street.

(Livability looks at how a neighbourhood's physical environment contributes to quality of life. Physical environment includes things like geographic layout, road conditions, speeds, and amenities.)

This project looks specifically at Marion Street from St. Mary’s Road to Lagimodière Boulevard, and Lagimodière from Marion to Dugald Road.

Thank you to all who participated in Phase 3 of public engagement. Phase 3 included meetings with landowners, an open house, and a survey. Feedback is currently being considered and a summary of the engagement process will be posted online.

Phase 3 of public engagement is in motion, and we want to hear from you!

Based on what we heard about design options in Phase 2, we have created a proposed design that would:

    • Improve traffic flow and road safety
    • Enhance neighbourhood vibrance and livability
    • Add new active transportation infrastructure

We want you to review this proposed design to see what the Marion Street corridor could look like and how it would function. Most importantly, we would like your feedback on the design and how it would change your experience with the area.

    Provide feedback online
View the proposed design and take the online survey, which will be available until March 24, 2023.

    Attend the open house
Learn more about the proposed design, ask questions, and provide feedback.

    Date: Thursday, March 16, 2023
    Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Location: Norwood Community Centre, 87 Walmer St.
    Room: Large hall
    Format: Drop-in (come and go)
No registration is required. Please join us if you are able.

Earlier this year, we reached out to landowners in the areas where the proposed design may impact their property to inform them and understand any concerns they have.

The feedback we have already gathered from landowners and during Phase 3 public engagement will help create a design with more technical detail and precise cost estimates for Council’s consideration.

  • Phase 2 public engagement summary now available

The Phase 2 public engagement summary and appendices are now available and provide an overview of the feedback collected for the project.

What we heard in Phase 2 will help us create a proposed conceptual design that will broadly show what the public space could look like, how it would function and – at a high-level – what it may cost.

This version of the design will be shared with the public to gather feedback as part of Phase 3 engagement. This feedback will support decision-making and the next level of design before construction.

Thank you to all who participated in Phase 2 of public engagement.

Public engagement opportunities were available from April 7 to 28, 2022.

Feedback is currently being considered and a summary of the engagement process will be posted online.

  • Phase 2 engagement begins

Phase 2 public engagement is now underway and we want to hear from you!

    We want your input on:

    • Features that could enhance neighbourhood vibrance and livability along the west section
    • New cycling infrastructure options in the Marion-Goulet couplet area and at Happyland Park
    • Improvements to the Youville-Marion-Goulet intersection

We would also like to tell you about the proposed solutions we have developed for a few key areas based on engineering best practices and traffic analysis. These areas include:

    • Roadway realignment on Youville
    • Improvements at the Marion-Archibald, Marion-Panet-Dawson, and Marion- Lagimodière/Dugald intersections

    Take the survey

Take the online survey until April 28, 2022.

    Virtual Engagement Sessions

We are hosting two online events that will provide a discussion space for you to learn more and provide input. These virtual sessions will look at the corridor's specific West or East areas and show the proposed design solutions and improvements. You can attend whichever one you are most interested in – or both!

We also reached out to landowners in the areas where proposed solutions have property impacts and continue to meet with those residents to inform them and understand their concerns.

Event #1: Moving on Marion Street – West Segment
    Date: Tuesday, April 19, 2022
    Time: 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
    Format: Zoom Virtual Event
    Register: Register here

When looking at the Marion-Goulet couplet – or West Segment – of the project area, we are looking to create a roadway that allows pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists to move around safely, while enhancing the comfort and livability of the neighbourhood.

Event #2: Moving on Marion Street – East Segment
    Date: Wednesday, April 20, 2022
    Time: 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
    Format: Zoom Virtual Event
    Register: Register here

Work on the East Segment – from Youville to Lagimodière – is focusing on finding minimally invasive, cost-effective engineering solutions to intersections and roadways to improve crossings, traffic flow, and safety, while also incorporating pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Both technical and public engagement assignments were awarded to consultants in early 2020. Building off what we heard during Phase 1 public engagement, we began investigating design concepts and will hold stakeholder meetings over the next few months. Phase 2 public engagement activities are planned for broad public participation in Fall 2021.

Request for Proposal (RFP) No. 888-2019 Professional Consulting Services for the Marion Street Corridor Improvements Study will begin the next phase of the study. The study will continue to seek public input through a secondary RFP NO. 887-2019 for Public Engagement Services for the Marion Street Corridor Improvements Study. The RFP for public engagement will be issued after the study RFP is awarded.

    Transitioning into the new study

In 2019, the public and stakeholders provided feedback before the new study begins to ensure the scope and scale are consistent with community needs. In June 2019, 108 people joined the project team at a listening and mapping session at Archwood Community Club and 384 participants complete the online survey and mapping tool.

    • Online survey: Launched on March 2, 2017, it remained open until March 24, 2017. A total of 404 surveys were submitted to the City.
    • Stakeholder interviews: Interviews were conducted by telephone from March 13, 2017 to March 31, 2017. A total of 29 telephone interviews were conducted with stakeholders.

Further analysis of public feedback is available with a public engagement summary and public engagement report now available under the documents tab.

Results from the 2019 engagement program confirmed the direction of the upcoming study and helped identify areas where improvements are needed/could be most impactful:

    • Improved infrastructure for active transportation including bike lanes and streetscaping elements
    • Preservation of the Happyland Park property and minimal impact in the vicinity of the Marion and Archibald Intersection
    • Current and future traffic conditions around the proposed redevelopment of the former Canada Packers Lands
    • Signal timing optimization and geometric review of roads for improvements to safety and traffic flow
    • The Public Service will engage with CP Rail about trains crossing Marion east of Archibald to determine if there are opportunities to lessen the impact of train delays on road users

Moving on Marion Street’s public engagement components will be carried out in accordance with the feedback
