How is this different from the Winnipeg Parks Strategy?

The Winnipeg Parks Strategy focuses on park land, park amenities, and services for park users. It doesn't cover all of the City's green spaces (e.g. cemeteries, golf courses, boulevards).

The Greenspace Plan and the Biodiversity Policy will address how greenspaces and natural corridors connect across different areas. This approach will help coordinate efforts to improve the health and well-being of all living things.

    What is co-development?

Co-development between Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments is used to co-design and co-create laws, policies, and/or plans in areas of common concern. It is not a “consultation”-based approach. It is partnership-based and results in collaborative design of shared policies, goals and interests.

The Greenspace Plan and the Biodiversity Policy will be co-developed, meaning contributions from each participant will be incorporated into the planning process, resulting in a collaborative outcome.

Why is the City of Winnipeg using the co-development process?

Co-development is an opportunity to create a Greenspace Plan and a Biodiversity Policy that reflects the voices and values of all.

The co-development process aligns with the Winnipeg Indigenous Accord, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and the Montreal Pledge.

Will this plan restrict what I can do on my own property?

The project will create a plan with ideas on how the city and community can work together to protect and improve greenspaces, natural corridors, and biodiversity.

We expect the plan to include ways to raise awareness and educate people in Winnipeg about why this is important and how they can help support the health of biodiversity and natural areas in our city.

The Greenspace Plan will be a bylaw. It may influence land use regulations to better protect natural areas.

How can I get involved in the project?

We want to make sure that residents stay informed about what’s happening in the project and have the opportunity to learn more about the importance of biodiversity and climate resiliency.

We also want to hear your thoughts on greenspaces and natural areas—what matters most to you and why.

Subscribe for project updates to stay informed on what's happening in the project.
