BACKGROUND

Heritage values are the reasons that a proposed HCD is architecturally or historically significant, based on the following criteria: 

• Its importance in illustrating or interpreting the history of the city or a neighbourhood;
• Its association with important individuals, groups, or events;
• Its illustration of the architectural or design history of the city;
• Its embodiment of distinct or unusual spatial organizations, circulation systems, land use and patterns, ecological or vegetative features, architectural or design characteristics, or particular styles or methods of construction;
• Its location in an area of historical or architectural interest; and
• Its historical or architectural integrity. 

Based on the information above, at the February 26, 2020 community meeting, we brought forward draft heritage values that make the neighbourhood significant. The proposed heritage values for this area include:

• It is an intact primarily residential neighbourhood over a century old 
• It is an early suburban neighbourhood in Winnipeg 
• It was envisioned and has many features of an exclusive high-end neighbourhood of early Winnipeg with large lots, many large homes and green space 
• Many of the residences were originally built and occupied by Winnipeg’s influential families 
• The integrity of residences’ building stock, the majority of which were built between 1900 and 1914 
• Where new building uses have been added, they have been integrated into the existing building forms
• New houses have been well-integrated into the streetscapes
• Three buildings are listed on the City of Winnipeg’s List of Historical Resources
• Seventeen buildings are listed on the City of Winnipeg’s Commemorative List 

WHAT WE HEARD

At the information meeting, participants were asked to comment on the proposed heritage values above and to identify others that were important to them. Additional comments heard at the information meeting have been listed as ideas in this activity.
